Problem with an ice layer in my freezer HELP!?

I have an older fridge w/ freezer and there is now a 4-5 inch layer of ice on the top...what are some ways to defrost or even do something easier, like sc it all out quickly. We have to much meat for a full defrost, so any ideas about scraping and removing the ice forcefully would be appreciated.
