2 different check amounts. 2 different employers. same # of hours. why?

Did you fill out the Form W-4 EXACTLY the same way at both jobs? If not, that would easily explain the difference. It's also possible that your prior employer never switched over to using the new withholding tables last April and withheld too much tax from your pay though if they do use the same payroll service that would be unlikely.
