Can my computer pick up a virus from pogo.com's website for playing free games?

My computer is in the shop now getting repaired and either has a virus on its hard drive or on the software...don't know yet. But was told virus may be from free computer downloads? If yes, how can I safely play games without this risk? Thanks!
